Anti-Rampal activists: Move power plant away from Sundarbans
The National Committee to Protect Sundarbans observed the 'Sundarbans Day' on Tuesday demanding halting all activities that may harm the world's largest mangrove forest. Sultana Kamal, speaking at a rally in Shahbagh, demanded restricting traffic on the mangrove's waterways. She also called for limiting tourist number, stopping shrimp farming and pollution of water bodies, among others. Her other demands include providing opportunities and education on priority basis to the floating communities in Sundarbans, apart from strengthening the Forest Department. Later, at a procession Communist Party leader Ruhin Hossain Prince said: “We want electricity and development, but not at the cost of the Sundarbans.” Bangladesh Paribesh Andolan and several other environment organisations declared February 14 as 'Sundarbans Day' in 2001 from the National Sundarbans Convention.
