Dirai-Sulla proud of their son Suranjit

Dirai unit AL has declared a three-day mourning that include hoisting of black flag, wearing black badge and offerign special prayers at temples and other religious institutions. Thousands of people are expected to attend Suranjit’s funeral to be held in Dirai today. Dirai AL president Ahsab Uddin Sarder told reporters that Suranjit Sengupta cared for and kept updates of the condition of the common people in his jurisdiction, and has been a comforting shade like that of a banyan tree for all. The unit’s vice president Md Siraj ud Doula Talukdar with the demise of Suranjit people of Dirai-Salla have not only lost a political leader, but also a guardian. In reminiscence, veteran politicians of Derai-Salla noted that Suranjit has been more popular in the locality in his pet name Dukhu Sen. The name was also used in the campaign for 1970 election of the then East Pakistan Provincial Assembly. Many recollected the vibrant cultural endeavours that Dukhu Sen was submerged with in his youthful days. He used to play the role of Mohon Lal in the famous drama “Sirajuddoula.” AL leader Belayet Hossain, former general secretary of Sunamganj College Student’s Union, said Suranjit developed a knack for politics and cultural activities as a student of the college. Suranjit always stole the show breathed life in the cultural circle at that time, Belayet remembered with fondness, adding that he could recite from memory dialogues of many Jatra plays with full clarity. Advocate Abhiram Talukdar, another AL leader, noted that the veteran politician was well versed in religious texts of both Hindus and Muslims and used to make frequent and well-picked allusions from the Qur’an. Besides his vibrant political career and fame as a seasoned parliamentairan, Suranjit’s memory is well wrought in the bricks of numerous religious, social, educational institutions founded or patroned by the great heart, the leaders observed. He died at Labaid Hospital around 4:24am on Sunday.
