DMP promises action against cops for assaulting journalists
“Police will not take responsibility for the crime of its members,” Md Asaduzzaman Mia said responding to a query at Shahbagh on Wednesday at a programme marking DMP's 42nd founding anniversary. Investigators looking into the January 26 assault filed their report on Tuesday. ATN News cameraperson Abdul Alim was attacked while recording footage of policemen beating up and dragging an anti-Rampal activist in front of Shahbag police station. Policemen pounced on the channel's reporter Kazi Ihsan bin Didar when he protested against the assault on his colleague. After primary investigation, police suspended Assistant Sub-Inspector Ershad Mondol and identified 14-15 others involved in the unprovoked attack. On the same day, police assaulted an on-duty Dhaka Tribune journalist at Mirpur when he approached them to confirm reports of a traffic sergeant ordering a bus to plough into anti-Rampal protesters. DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman said they punished 400 policemen for various offences last year.
