Five people, including four members of a family, have been killed as a train hit a car carrying the five at a level crossing in Kaliakoir of Gazipur.
“Kolkata-bound Maitree Express hit the car when it was passing Sonakhali level crossing around 10:15am on Sunday, leaving the five dead on the spot,” Kaliakoir OC Abdul Motaleb told the Dhaka Tribune. The train dragged the car around 200 metres.
Officials admitted that the level crossing had no guard or boom barrier.
“A police team has been sent to the spot to recover the bodies,” the OC added.
Train communication between Dhaka and Mymensingh, and Dhaka and northern districts have remained snapped since the accident as four wheels of the train derailed from the tracks, according to Joydevpur Station Master Md Shahidul Islam.
Several trains had been stuck at the nearby stations due to the accident, he added.
