As the harvest is approaching nearer, the farmers of the upazila are toiling day and night on their potato fields following the suggestions of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials.
The upazila DAE has fixed a target of cultivating potatoes on approximately 2,000 hectors of land during this Rabi season in eight unions of the upazila. Potatoes are mostly cultivated in Shahagola, Vopara, Moniari and Ahsanganj unions.
DAE officials said if everything goes accordingly potato farmers of the upazila would reap the harvest in due time. Farmers are expecting a bumper yield as the potato fields were not affected by any disease this season, due to direct technical support and regular suggestions provided by agriculture officials.
Azad Sarder, a farmer from Shahagola union, said: “This season, I have cultivated potato on five bighas of land. I preserved some seeds at cold storage, and bought the rest from market. Seeing the crops on the field, it seems I would get a bumper yield.”
Ayet Ali from Borodanga village has cultivated potatoes on almost eight and a half bighas of land. “As the fields were not affected by any disease, or hit by any natural calamity, I hope to get bumper production,” he said.
Md Shafi Uddin, agriculture officer of Vabanipur block of the upazila, said: “We are providing direct technical assistance and suggestions whenever needed to prevent any unwanted attack of disease. We are expecting a bumper yield as at present potato fields are almost hundred percent free of disease.”
Contacted, upazila DAE official agriculturist KM Kawser said this year a huge amount of potatoes, comparing to the previous year, have been cultivated in eight unions of the upazila. DAE officials are providing necessary suggestions to the farmers over nurturing the crop so that the potato fields are not affected by any disease. If everything goes accordingly, if any natural disaster does not occur, there is a good possibility of a bumper yield of potatoes in Atrai upazila this season.
“Not only that, as the potato fields are generally fertile, cultivators will get the good return in Irri-boro cultivation also,” he added.
