Abducted college student found dead in Satkhira
Police recovered the body of Gautam Sarkar, a third-year bachelors student at Simanta Adorsho College, from a pond near his house on Saturday morning. His hands and legs were tied with rope. Satkhira Sadar police station Sub-Inspector Abul Kalam told the Dhaka Tribune that five people had been arrested over the incident. Gautam's father Ganesh Mondol said his son did had gone missing on December 13 from their village Mohadebnagar. “The kidnappers called me that night and demanded Tk10 lakh and told me not to contact police,” Ganesh said. He informed local UP chairman Fazlur Rahman and police about the matter. Ganesh said he had gone to the designated spot with money, accompanied by SI Kalam, on December 14 night. But the abductors asked him to send the ransom through mobile money transfer. Soon after, police detained three suspicious youths – Shahadat Hossain, Shaon and Saju – from the spot. Ganesh claimed it was Shahadat who had called him to seek ransom. Police said they arrested two other accomplices of Shahadat on Friday night on information he divulged. Nazmul told police that they had killed Gautam and dumped his body in a pond. Sadar police OC Firoz Hossain Mollah said a murder case had been filed against six people, including the detainees. The sixth accused, Kabirul Islam, is on the run.
