At least 500 houses were destroyed and hundreds of people were left homeless
in a blaze blamed on the ruling party activists
"Of the victims, 495 families had enlisted for financial assistance by Wednesday," said SM Mahmudul Hasan, central vice president of Community Based Organisation.
He said 34 other Korail victim families, who were absent when the initial list was made, were included in the updated list of those eligible for UNDP aid.
The UNDP is handing out financial aid at the Hussain Mohammad Ershad School playground on Thursday. The assistance is being given from the Urban Partnership for Poverty Reduction fund through the Dhaka North City Corporation Community Town Federation.
Mahmudul said he was not sure whether the UNDP would also provide financial assistance to the victims of the recent Sattola slum fire.
The Korail slum is the largest such dwelling in the city, with around 300,000 residents who have avoided several eviction attempts by authorities over the years. The slum sits on land owned by the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL).
