Tarana: Won't publish online porn viewers' names
“We never said we would list online porn consumers from Bangladesh,” she said in a post on her official Facebook page on Tuesday. The state minister for posts and telecommunications claimed the announcement about such list was “baseless” and blasted her critics for trolling without fact-checking. Tarana clarified that a committee had been formed to list pornographic websites in Bangladesh so that access to these websites can be restricted. "I have read in newspapers that a section of the population is getting involved in crime because of their addiction to porn,” she wrote. “But revealing names [of online porn viewers] is preposterous,” she added. Tarana had earlier said the government was planning to develop a mechanism to reveal the internet porn consumers in Bangladesh and hoped that the fear of being outed as a porn viewer would act as a deterrent. She went on to express that the backlash and criticism was misplaced and complained that she was subject to unwarranted trolling. The state minister said the government is determined to protect privacy of the people.
