The BNP leader came up with his demand yesterday while he was campaigning for party candidate Shakhawat Hossain in Narayanganj.
Fakhrul said: “Nobody is safe under this government which has trampled democracy and basic rights.”
He also said: “The people are being denied the right to vote. The future of the national election depends on this (NCC) election.”
Last week, most of mayoral candidates sought army deployment during a discussion with Election Commissioner Jabed Ali, for a fair election.
Meanwhile, after meeting law enforcement agencies, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said there was no need to deploy the army in the NCC polls.
Ruling Awami League candidate Selina Hayat Ivy is believed to be the favourite candidate. She had won the maiden NCC polls in 2012 to become the first woman to hold the city corporation mayor’s office in Bangladesh.
Fakhrul went to the city BNP office in the morning and interacted with the media. He accompanied party candidate Shakhawat and activists of the BNP-led 20-party alliance as they paraded through key roads in the city.
The BNP secretary general said he hoped the people would make the “right decision” and vote for the BNP candidate.
BNP-backed mayoral candidate Shakhawat Hossain alleged that Narayanganj constituency 4 Lawmaker and Awami League leader Shamim Osman violated election code and conducts praying votes for Ivy. Earlier, on Friday, Shamim Osman in a press briefing prayed vote for Ivy, a competent mayoral candidate of boat, electoral symbol of the ruling party Awami League.
Shakhawat Hossain came up with these allegations while he was talking to reporters during electioneering.
However, NCC Election Returning Officer Nuruzzaman Talukder said no one had complained to him yet.
Besides these, Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Selina Hayat Ivy thanked Shamim Osman for presenting her a Sari.
Ivy said: “Thanks to elder brother Shamim Osman for the gift.”
