Today the nation celebrates the 136th birth and 84th death anniversaries of Begum Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain.
Women and Children Affairs Ministry and various other socio-cultural and political organisations are observing the day with elaborate programmes, including milad, placing wreaths at her portraits, discussions, rally and cultural functions.
The day has been observed at Dhaka University amid due festivity. A colourful rally led by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique was brought out from Rokeya Hall in the morning and it ended at the Teacher-Student Centre after parading different streets on the campus.
The Rokeya Hall authorities organised a Rokeya Memorial Foundation lecture series, gold medal and scholarship giving ceremony in its auditorium in the evening.
Bangladesh Nari Samity and Gonoshanghati Andolon also paid respect to Begum Rokeya by placing wreaths at Rokeya Memorial in the hall in the morning.
Begum Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain was born on December 9, 1880 at Pairaband village in Rangpur. She passed away on December 9, 1932 in Kolkata.
Earlier, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages paying tribute to Begum Rokeya on the occasion.
In his message, the president said Begum Rokeya’s ideals and activities would inspire all to build a society based on equity and free from gender disparity.
He congratulated those who are going to receive the Rokeya Padak-2016 for their contributions to women development.
The PM said Begum Rokeya played a leading role in spreading the light of education among the women overcoming different obstacles.
