Three killed in ‘gunfights’ in Feni, Jessore

In Feni, two suspected robbers were killed in a gunfight between a group of robbers and members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Lalpol area on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Feni Sadar upazila in the early hours of yesterday, said our Feni correspondent. The identities of the deceased robbers could not be known. RAB Feni camp in-charge Safayet Jamil Fahim said: “Acting on a secret information that, members of an inter-district robber gang were taking preparation to commit robbery on the highway, a patrol team of RAB conduct a drive in the area around 2:45am. “Sensing the presence of the elite force, the robbers opened fire on the RAB, prompting them to retaliate,” he said. During the gunfight, two robbers caught in the line of fire and died on the spot. Three pistols, two guns and bullets were recovered from the spot, said RAB sources. The bodies were sent to the Feni Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examinations. In Jessore, a wanted criminal was killed in a reported gunfight between two criminal gangs in Kholadanga area in Sadar upazila, Jessore yesterday, said our Jessore correspondent Tauhid-Uz-Zaman. The deceased Hafizur Rahman Morer, 35, is the son of late Shofi Mia and a listed criminal of Sasthitala in the district town. Ilias Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station, said: “Being informed that two groups of criminals had engaged in a gunfight in the area, a team of police went to the spot around 1:30am. “After reaching the spot police found the bullet-hit body of Hafizur. However, police could not arrest anyone as the criminals fled from the area sensing the presence of police,” he said. Police recovered two firearms, two bullets and two shells of bullets from the spot. The OC also said: “Killed Hafizur was wanted in a number of cases, including that of murder, drugs and explosives act.”
