Bangladeshi human trafficker arrested in Libya

A Bangladeshi national was arrested in Libya on charge of his involvement in trafficking of 37 compatriots and others alluring them of lucrative jobs in the war-ravaged Libya. Tripoli police arrested Sujon, a resident from Noakhali, on Thursday with the help of Bangladesh embassy in Tripoli, according to a post uploaded on the facebook page of Bangladesh embassy in Tripoli Saturday. Sujon was involved in human trafficking for long from Bangladesh to Libya and realising huge amount of money from families of the job seekers by keeping hostage of the trafficked Bangladeshi nationals, the facebook post said. The Bangladesh embassy officials were informed about Sujon when they visited the 37 Bangladeshi nationals, who were detained at "Al Hamra" detention centre in Gharyan town of Libya for illegally entering the country. The Libyan police detained the 37 Bangladeshi nationals in Gharyan town when they were trying to reach Italy through the Mediterranean Sea on November 8. However, Libyan police rescued at least 65 Bangladeshi nationals from traffickers' den at Tajoura suburb of Libyan capital Tripoli three weeks ago. The Bangladesh government officially banned sending its nationals to Libya in June last year on security grounds. Libya also suspended recruitment of foreign workers against the backdrop of the troubling situation in the North African country. Around 30,000 Bangladeshis are now working in Libya, the facebook page added.
