Police now trying to hunt down ABT ‘Mufti Board’ members

Update : 15 Nov 2016, 12:43 AM
The ‘Mufti Board’, formed with four high profile members of the outfit, used to give instruction to kill after getting report on any particular target person from its ‘intelligence wing’. The intelligence wing members selected and suggested target after conducting a brief survey. A high official of DB police, involved with interrogation process, yesterday told the Dhaka Tribune: “We came to know the process after interrogating ABT intelligence wing member Khairul Islam.” Mentionable, Khairul was detained on Friday last and is now on a five-day remand. The official who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not allowed to speak to media said: “We have got a brief idea about ABT’s operation system and have already traced at least one member of its ‘Mufti Board’. His name is Maulana Osman Goni, who works as a teacher at a Madrasha of Dhaka.” The official declined to provide further details about Maulana Osman as investigation is still ongoing. “We have been able to extract information on bloggers and publisher killings and on ABT’s Mufti Board from Khairul,” said the official. Sources in DB police also said one Major Sayed Ziaul Haque, suspended from army, lead the operation wing of ABT and all the blogger and publisher killings were carried out as per his direction. Zia activated the operation wing members after the Mufti Board had passed their judgment on a particular target. “Zia could not take the decision alone. After getting the judgment or instruction to kill from the Mufti Board, Zia passed the directives to ABT’s Hadi members, who used to organise and operate ‘sleeper cells’. Once the Hadi members were instructed by the operation wing chief, they passed the order to members of a ‘sleeper cell’ to execute the plan,” DB sources said. They said after getting the name of a target, the intelligence wing members start collecting full database of the person including his movement, residence, visiting areas and time of going back home. Once the full database on the target person’s daily routing is made, the operation wing members then take position at a rented house from where they execute their killing mission. ABT named these houses as ‘shelter home’. It has been also learnt that the intelligence wing made the list of target persons after taking help of their IT section, who first analyze any person’s online activities. Masruqure Rahman Khaled, deputy commissioner of DB Police, told the Dhaka Tribune: “We have got some ideas about ABT’s ‘shelter homes’ from where they execute killing missions. We are now trying to trace out these locations find out the whereabouts of the absconding members of ABT.” According to investigating sources, ABT set up their temporary den at Khilgaon while killing blogger Niloy. While taking part in publisher Dipon killing mission, they set up their temporary den at Tongi and Mohakhali.
