A freedom fighter and Awami League leader of Shailkupa upazila in Jhenaidah, who was beaten by local goons is still undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur.
He was rushed to a local hospital after being injured when local AL men attacked him on October 18 because of an intra-party feud.
Moktar Ahmed Mridha (63), had his second consecutive operation yesterday after sustaining arm and leg injuries.
Moktar, a former union parishad (UP) chairman of Abaipur, Shailkupa, is receiving treatment at BDM hospital since October 19.
Moktar said: “I was sitting at the pharmacy around 7:00pm when some local thugs, armed with weapons attacked me mercilessly.”
Led by Md Hakim, members of Chattra League and Jubo League hit him with metal rods and bamboo canes until he lost consciousness.
His youngest son Golam Morshed is being treated at the same hospital after trying to rescue him.
Moktar stated the attackers are affiliated with Abdul Hai, Jhenaidah 1 MP and district AL president and Sona Shikdar, Shailakupa upazila AL president.
A case was lodged with Shailakupa police station accusing Jadab Hossain, Ripon Hossain, Suman Hossain, Shawan Shikdar, Sachchu Mia, Shamim Hossain Mollah, Kornel Hossain, Rajib Bahadur and two others.
They are all out on bail, said Shumon Mridha, Moktar’s eldest son.
In response to the attack, on October 27, Shailakupa upazila Chhatra League General Secretary Shawan Shikdar, Swechchasebak League upazila unit President Cornel Ahmed and Organising Secretary Shihab Molla were suspended from their respective organisations.
No central leaders visited the victim at the hospital to check on his condition and express solidarity with him.
The freedom fighter seeks justice from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Secretary Obaidul Quader as district AL body tried to save the culprits.
Meanwhile, MP Abdul Hai yesterday claimed that he was not involved in the assault of Moktar.
“Opponents are hatching a conspiracy against me to tarnish my reputation,” he stated while addressing a press conference in Jhenaidah.
The MP denied his involvement with the assault after footage of the attack went viral on social media.
The video showed five men attacking Moktar as he tried to protect himself with his bare hands.
After the footage went viral, comments and opinions from angered netizens started pouring in.
MP Abdul Hai added that the perpetrators had been identified from the footage.
During the press briefing, leaders of Awami League district unit Saidul Karim Mintu, Advocate Azizur Rahman and Abdul Wahed Joardar, were present among others.
