Managing committee of the Sitakali Temple suspect that priest Bhanu Bhattacharya, 65, who has the key of the room where the idol is installed, could be behind the theft.
Though the incident took place early Sunday when the Kali Puja was under way at the temple, the matter came to light after the managing committee informed the OC of Hathazari police verbally yesterday.
OC Belal Uddin Jahangir told the Dhaka Tribune that they were investigating the incident.
General Secretary of the managing committee Uday Sen said that it was Bhanu who first discovered that the two gold necklaces had been missing while cleaning the room. “He also found a broken piece of the ornaments and informed us on Sunday morning.”
“None but the priest is allowed to enter the room,” he added.
Located beside the Hathazari Boro Madrasa, the temple was established in the area in 1940.
