
The DIG of Khulna range Moniruzzaman made the statement while talking to journalists at Bagerhat press club yesterday afternoon.
He said the four JMB men identified as Akash Mollah, 21, resident of Katarbil area of the upazila, Md Habib Ullah, 19, Kabirul Islam, 26, of Nazirpur upazila, and Mizanur Rahman, had already given confessional statement before a court under section 164.
He said: “The wing of the JMB is conducting activities in the south under supervision of a close aid of Bangla bhai, who was executed on 30 March, 2007 over militancy.”
But the DIG refused to mention the name of the JMB leader for the sake of investigation.
He said: “Taking the advantage of internal feud in Awami League, the New JMB is planning subversive activities in Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira, Pirojpur and Jessore.
“Police personnel, including constables, are in the target-list of the JMB where a good number of IT experts are working,” said the high official of police citing the arrestees.
On Tuesday, acting on a tip-off, a team from Kachua police station raided an abandoned house of one Safayet Sheikh around 3am.
But, sensing the presence of police, the militants opened fire at them, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.
Later, police arrested the four while others managed to flee the spot.
One revolver, two rounds of bullets, five crude bombs and some bomb making materials were discovered in the house.
