Two Bangladeshi-Germans in custody for carrying 'firearms'
Monir Ben Ali was detained with 4 of each Walther gas waffen (gas weapon) 9mm ppk and Zoraki gas waffen (gas weapon) 9mm PPK. Monir and Anisul Islam Talukder landed in Dhaka on an Emirates Airlines flight around 8:40am yesterday. Customs officials found the gas weapons in a carton when Monir was frisked, said airport customs. Monir was detained from the Green channel when the gas weapons were found in his suitcase when it was being scanned. They later, detained his friend Anisul. The detainees said that objects found are props to be used in movies which the customs officials called in the expertise of Rapid Action Battalion that confirmed that they were guns. The two detainees said they were friends for a long time as they both come from the same district and live in Munich. Monir, a restaurateur in Munich said he brought the gas weapons after meeting a man named Eram there last November. Eram offered to pay him Tk50,000 each for bring the gas weapons saying that he did not need customs clearance. The four Walther gas waffen 9mm ppk and Zoraki gas waffen 9mm PPK cost him around 120 Euros. He said: “Emran told me that I would have to pay a tax at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport airport and not need to procure prior permission to carry them. The authorities at Munich airport told me to collect the gas weapons from immigration in Dhaka.” He said he had all the paper related to buying the gas weapons saying that if they were indeed firearms then the authorities at Munich airport would not let him carry them. A RAB sources said the gas weapons were seized because they were heavier than usual suspecting them to be firearms and will conduct a ballistic test. Customs sources said they will have to determine if the seized gas weapons are firearms. "We will send these firearms to Criminal Investigation Department for ballistic tests and till the reports come, the detainees will be in our custody,” said JC Sohel Rahman of airport customs.
