Tampaco fire: Bodies still coming out, 3 more today
Rescuers yesterday recovered the bodies of three more workers from the rubble of the Tampaco Foils Limited factory in Tongi. Fire Service rescuers pulled out two bodies after 11am and another around 1:10pm yesterday, Gazipur Fire Service Deputy Director Aktaruzzaman Liton told the Dhaka Tribune. Both the bodies are in no condition to be identified, he added. With the recovery, the death toll from the disaster now climbs up to 39, our Gazipur correspondent reports. A massive fire erupted at the food and cigarette packaging factory after a huge explosion on September 10. What caused the fire is still unknown. Gas supplier Titas Gas in its report claimed gas leak did not trigger the fire. It was Bangladesh’s worst industrial disaster since the 2013 Rana Plaza collapse that left over 1,100 people, mostly readymade garment workers, dead. Bangladesh’s industries have been plagued by allegations of low wage and lax safety measures. After the November 2012 Tazreen fire, which killed over 100 workers, the government made major efforts to improve working condition, but the efforts were largely focused on the export-oriented garments sector. Meanwhile, the High Court yesterday asked the government to freeze the bank accounts of the owner of Tampaco Foils Limited Syed Mokbul Hussain. The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das also issued a rule asking why direction of providing sufficient compensation to the inferno victims will not be given. The High Court order came after the court heard a writ petition filed by three rights organisations —Ain o Salish Kendra, Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association and Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust who moved the petition recently. In the order, the court said that only workers salary and benefits can be paid from the bank account. The factory authorities have to submit a report before the court within a month on how much money was spent in this purpose. The writ petition had prayed for the court’s directives to provide treatment for the injured and the government to identify and punish those responsible for the deadly fire. It also urged the court to seek an investigation report from the government. The petitioners prayed to the court to freeze the bank accounts of the factory owners and distribute the money among the victims as compensation.
