The deceased were identified as Iman Ali, 35, hailed from Mashpara village, and Shahabuddin, 42, of Baidyanathpur village.
Of the injured, eight people were admitted into Kushtia General Hospital in critical conditions and the rest of them at different local hospitals of the district, police said.
Quoting locals Jhaodia police camp SI Dilip Biswas told the Dhaka Tribune that a clash between supporters of Sadar upazila Awami League joint general secretary also Jhaodia UP Chairman Keramat Ali and Jhaodia union unit AL president Bokhtiar Hossain erupted around 6:30am.
The men of Bokhtiar interrupted a group of people of Keramat Ali when they entered into Mashpara village that triggered the clash, said the SI.
“At one point of the clash, Iman Ali died on the spot when he was hit by a locally made sharp weapon by the rivals. Iman was a supporter of Keramat Ali, locals claimed.”
Of the injured, Shahabuddin succumbed to his injuries at Kushtia General Hospital, said on-duty doctor Ruhul Amin. No information was available about Shahabuddin’s political affiliation.
On information, police rushed to the spot and opened two rounds of blank shots, SI Dilip Biswas said, adding that the situation is now under control.
Locals claimed that some 22 houses were ransacked and looted by the unruly people during the two-hour clash.
Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to avoid further untoward incident.
