Custom intelligence has detained a person with a drone at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka due to a ban on its import.
The DJI Phantom 4 model drone was recovered from the bag of Nazrul Islam on Tuesday night. An Air Arabia flight carrying Nazrul landed at the airport around 10pm.
The detainee was identified as Nazrul Islam of Kushtia, based on information in his passport, although he claimed to be Md Jahidul Islam, 40.
Customs Intelligence Director General Moinul Khan said: “Acting on a tip-off, we searched the passenger’s luggage and recovered the drone. He had earlier denied carrying it.”
“He told us one of his friends from Dubai had given it to him and asked him to deliver it to someone here,” Moinul said.
The 14kg drone can be used for shooting videos as well as spying, the customs official added.
The drone is capable of carrying 1kg of weight and travel at a speed of 72kmph (45mph), which makes it more advanced than the drone that was seized from the airport on July 27.
