Salauddin Quader’s wife, son acquitted in verdict leak case
The Bangladesh Cyber Tribunal Judge KM Shamsul Alam cleared Salauddin's wife Farhat Quader Chowdhury and son Hummam Quader Chowdhury of the charges on Thursday afternoon. Md Nazrul Islam Shamim, special public prosecutor of the tribunal, confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune. The tribunal also convicted five people, including the lawyer who represented executed war criminal Salauddin Quader Chowhdury, in the case. The court sentenced the war criminal's lawyer Fakhrul Islam to 10 years in prison and slapped a Tk1 crore fine. Four others – Salauddin's manager Mahbubul Ahsan, Fakhrul’s assistant Mehedi Hasan, and war crimes tribunal’s office staff Faruk Hossain and Nayan Ali – have been handed down seven year imprisonment and fined Tk10,000 each. They will have to serve six months' additional time if they fail to pay the fine. Read More: Judgement in Salauddin Quader Chowdhury verdict leak case deferred again The convicts, in connivance with each other, leaked parts of the draft verdict from the tribunal chairman’s computer and uploaded it on different websites a day before the judgment was delivered on October 1, 2013 to make the war crimes trial controversial. Family of the former BNP lawmaker made huge investments to leak the draft verdict, the case says. Mehedi, Mahbubul, Faruk and Nayan were directly involved in the crime, according to the charge sheet. Salauddin was executed at Dhaka Central Jail on November 22 last year.
