Rail communication with Chittagong resumes

Update : 15 Sep 2016, 07:03 PM
Train communication on Dhaka-Chittagong and Sylhet-Chittagong routes have resumed after a 10-hour derailment. The rail communication between Chittagong and other parts of the country was restored around 1:50am on Thursday. “The rail communication was restored after three relief trains salvaged the derailed train compartments from the track,” said Divisional Transport Officer (DTO) Firoj Iftekhar of Bangladesh Railway (East Zone). Four compartments of Dhaka-bound Godhuli Express veered off the rail line in Chittagong city’s Pahartali level crossing area on Wednesday evening. Around six people were injured in the incident. Bangladesh Railway officials said train schedule of different routes from Chittagong collapsed leading to the sufferings of the commuters. Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Manjurul Alam Chowdhury of BR said: “A container laden train derailed in the Up- line in Chittagong’s Foujdarhat Station area on Wednesday morning that blocked Dhaka-bound rail track. “Dhaka-bound Godhuli Express was operated using Down-line.” “The accident took place when the train was plying in Down-line to get back in Up-line after crossing the Pahartali Railway Station around 3:20pm on Wednesday,” said the DRM adding that of the 17 compartments of Godhuli Express, three air conditioned compartments veered off from the line while another derailed. He, however, said the train had resumed its journey to Dhaka leaving behind the affected compartments at around 4:35pm. A large portion of the track had been damaged but no major casualties were reported in this incident, he added. Fire Service and Civil Defense Headquarters in Chittagong’s Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) Jasim Uddin told Dhaka Tribune: “On information, fire fighters and BR officials rushed to the spot and began the rescue operation. DRM Manjurul said a four-member committee headed by DTO Firoj Iftekhar was formed to probe the accident. “The probe committee has been asked to submit the report as soon as possible,” added the high BR official.
