The programme - “Sheikh Hasinar Bangladesh, Khudha hobe Niruddesh” - is aimed at making rice available at a very low price for the poor of the country.
Some five million families will get the food support for the months of March, April, September, October and November every year.
Earlier in the morning, the premier reached Chilmari upazila on a helicopter, and later joined a rally at AU Pilot High School ground.
The premier said, “The food programme for ultra poor would continue across the country for which special cards would be issued... No one will have to starve anymore”
The district food controller office said some 1,25,279 families of Kurigram will be benefited by the programme.
With Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam in the chair, the programme was also addressed by Agriculture Minister Matiya Chowdhury, Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor, and State Minister for Social Affairs Ministry Nuruzzaman Ahmed, State Minister for local government Moshiur Rahman Ranga, lawmaker Khaled Mahmood Chowdhury and local parliament members.
