Kamal: Militants refusing to surrender will meet the same fate as others

Update : 04 Sep 2016, 01:59 AM
If militants refuse to surrender before law enforcement officers when they are given opportunities to do so, they will meet the same fate as other militants who died in police raids, said Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal yesterday. Speaking at an event on creating mass awareness against terrorism in Tejgaon Polytechnical Institute, Dhaka, Kamal said: “We wanted to arrest Murad alias Jahangir alias Omar alive. But sensing the presence of law enforcement agencies, he attacked them and police were compelled to respond, resulting in the death of the JMB instructor.” At least 18 militants were killed in Dhaka and its adjacent area in the last two months in three drives conducted by law enforcement agencies. Among them, five were killed in Gulshan, nine in Kallyanpur, three in Paikpara, Narayanganj and the last one on Friday night in the city’s Rupnagar area. Four policemen were injured during the Rupnagar drive: Rupnagar police station OC Shahid Alam, OC (investigation) Shahin Fakir, Sub-Inspector Momanur Rahman and Assistant Sub-Inspector Bokhari. They were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH); later, OC Shahid and OC Shahin were transferred to Square Hospital. Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman said the policemen were out of danger and undergoing treatment at the hospital’s ICU. The other injured policemen at the DMCH are also out of risk. The customer service officer of Square Hospital confirmed yesterday that Shahid and Shahin were being in the ICU after going through surgeries around 4am. Meanwhile, DMP Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crimes (CTTC) unit chief Monirul Islam said police were working to uproot militancy from the country. Speaking at a programme at Viqarunnisa Noon School and College yesterday, the CTTC chief said as militants were very few in number, their activities were short-lived and would soon be uprooted. He said militants use religion for their own interests and they use politics to pursue their own political goals. He urged everyone to stay alert and not be convinced by these terrorists.
