Tea workers to go on strike on Monday

The Bangladesh Tea Workers' Union made the announcement on Friday, after an emergency meeting held at the Srimangal Labour House in the afternoon, stating that the workers across Bangladesh would observe the agitation programme simultaneously to press home their demands.

The move came after six people died recently of starvation as the authorities of Baikunthapur Tea Estate located at Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj stopped paying workers four months ago.

Joint Secretary of the workers union Nipel Pal told the Dhaka Tribune that they would go on tougher movement in the future, if their demands were not met.

The Baikunthapur workers earlier demonstrated in front of the Habiganj Deputy Commissioner's office on August 14 and the UNO office on July 28.
