Defamation case against Janakantha editor

Prof Abdullah Harun Chowdhury of Environmental Science department at KU filed the case with the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Faruk Iqbal on Thursday accusing reporter Rashid Mamun, Editor and Publisher Md Atikullah Khan Masud and Executive Editor Swadesh Roy of the daily.

The court fixed September 28 for hearing on the case.

According to the case statements, Janakantha published a report on August 3 under the headline “Bibhranti-e Hatiar: Rampal Kendro Birodhi Andolan (Confusion is the weapon: Movement against Rampal power plant),” in which Prof Harun was mentioned as a pro-Jamaat teacher.

In the report, Janakantha published, “At the very beginning, two teachers of environmental science at two public universities instigated environmentalists with a propaganda research on Rampal issue. Both the teachers are pro-Jamaat. Early in 2013, Dr Abdullah Harun Chowdhury came to Dhaka for a press conference with a research that stated the Sundarbans was going to be destroyed with the Rampal power plant. This is when the environmentalists waged a movement against Rampal power plant. There is allegation that the research was done to propagate that the government was destroying the Sundarbans and to use the anti-India sentiment. The teacher of Khulna University resorted to this strategy to benefit the opposition camp in the 2014 general elections.”

In his case statement, Prof Harun claimed that the information in the report was false.
