The protest was held for an hour blocking all traffic movement at Shabag intersection. Activists brought out a procession from DU campus towards Shahabag and formed the blockade which was broken by police an hour later. General Secretary of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Snehardi Chakrabarti Rintu, said: “Police attacked us and left six activists injured while trying to break the barricade.” Protesters claimed to be attacked by the police as well. Rintu also said some where critically injured and were taken to DMC for treatment. Tahsin Mahmud, secretary general of DU unit Chhatra Federation, said: “Gobinda Das was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for primary treatment.” Officer-in-Charge of Shahabag Police station Abu Bakar Siddique denied allegations that protesters were assaulted by the police. He said: “We requested them not to block the intersection because of public suffering.” During the blockade protesters announced a country wide demonstration on August 18 demanding Rampal power plant be cancelled. Coordinator of PCJ Naima Khaled Monika vowed to continue movement saying: “our movement is not against the development of the country, it is for protecting the Sundarbans and the people of the adjacent areas.”
