SC: Brac to pay Tk404cr due tax

Brac, the world’s largest non-government organisation, will have to pay its due Tk4,042,058,892 income tax which was previously exempted considering it a charitable organisation. The five-member bench of the Supreme Court's Appellate Division led by the Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha on Wednesday scrapped a previous High Court decision which exempted the amount. The tax amount was due in 11 tax years between 1993 and 2012. The apex court heard arguments on eleven separate government appeals filed against the High Court order of 2014 to deliver the verdict, Deputy Attorney General Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir told media. The commissioner of tax issued 11 notices to the NGO seeking the due money which was challenged by Brac with the High Court.
