Criminal killed in Rajshahi 'gunfight' traced as top JMB leader

Rajshahi police have identified the youth killed in Tuesday's “shootout” with law enforcers as a senior leader of the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). In this regard, Bangladesh Police issued a press release on Wednesday signed by Additional Inspector General (Media and PR) Md Jalal Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury. Killed Nazrul Islam alias Parvez alias Hasan alias Bike Hasan was involved in a total of 11 murders including Japanese national Hoshi Kunio and Rajshahi University Professor AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee. Nazrul had also attempted two more murders. On July 29, Rajshahi police announced a bounty of Tk1 lakh for his arrest along with another JMB man involved in the RU Prof Rezaul murder. He was killed in a gunfight in Rajshahi city’s Ashraf intersection around 4:30am when a gang of criminals opened fire at the law enforcers prompting them to retaliate, said Senior Assistant Commissioner of Rajpara Zone of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Ifte Khayer Alam. Police had recovered firearms and bullets from the spot, added Khayer.
