Tavella murder charge sheet accepted
A Dhaka court has accepted the charge sheet against seven people in Italian national Cesare Tavella's murder case. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sabbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury also issued arrest warrants against BNP Dhaka City Joint Convener MA Qayum and Md Sohel alias Bhangari Sohel. On June 28, Detective Branch (DB) of police submitted a charge sheet against seven people in a case filed over the murder of Tavella in Dhaka last year. The five other accused are Qayum’s brother MA Matin, Tamjid Ahmed Rubel alias Shotter Rubel, Russell Chowdhury alias Chakki Russell, Minhajul Arefin, and Shakhawat Hossain alias Sharif. According to the charge sheet, BNP leader MA Qayum planned the murder of Tavella as part of a conspiracy to create anarchy, put pressure on the government and send a message to foreigners that they were not safe in Bangladesh. Qayum’s brother MA Matin coordinated the murder and hired three assassins to kill a “white man”, the charge sheet said. Qayum and Sohel are currently on the run. The remaining five men are behind bars. Four accused – Rubel, Russell, Minhajul and Shakhawat – have made confessional statements in the case before Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court. While Matin admitted to involvement in the killing during interrogation by the police, he refused to make a confessional statement before the court. Family members of the accused maintain that the five arrested men are innocent and claim they were forced to give statements under duress. The court appointed DB inspector Golam Rabbani as investigating officer for the case. Cesare Tavella, an aid worker and veterinary surgeon, was shot dead at Road 90, Gulshan 2 last year. He had been living alone in Dhaka and worked on food security issues for a Dutch aid organisation.
