SC allows Shafik Rehman to file bail petition
The four-member Appellate Division bench led by the Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order on Sunday following hearing a leave-to-appeal petition. The court granted the arrested journalist's counsel three weeks for the appeal's summary submission while the state was given a week for the same job. Besides, the state authorities will have to submit a supplementary report on the progress of investigation in the case within the period. Shafik Rehman’s lawyer Md Asaduzzaman said the court also asked the jail authorities to ensure treatment for the journalist who can be admitted to the BSMMU if necessary. The journalist moved the leave-to-appeal plea with the SC after the High Court on June 7 rejected his bail plea on the ground that an investigation was going on in the case. Shafik Rehman was arrested from his Dhaka residence on April 16 in the case launched in May, 2015.
