Bill to ban Jamaat to be placed in parliament

Update : 26 Jun 2016, 06:52 PM
A bill will be placed during the ongoing parliament session to ban Jamaat-e-Islami, the party accused of committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War, from all political activities, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq said on Sunday. “Jamaat-e-Islami is a war criminal party because they opposed the Liberation War as a party. They do not have any right to do politics in the country. There is no alternative way except banning them. The law minister informed me that the bill on banning Jamaat politics will be placed this session. I hope the bill will be placed soon,” he said at parliament. Speaking during the budget session at the parliament, the minister said: “The freedom fighters risked their lives in the war. Eid is ahead. Everyone will get festival bonus but freedom fighters will not get any bonus. They have demanded for two special allowances on March 26 and December 16. “By our estimation, only Tk400 crore is needed to fulfil their demands. I have requested the prime minister and the finance minister to allot the money for them.” The liberation war minister continued that his ministry would take initiative to ensure free medical treatment for the freedom fighters inside the country, but they have yet to decide on the provision of treatment abroad. About the new list of freedom fighters, the minister said: “We will publish it online soon. We will give ID cards to them to ensure security.”
