Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has strongly condemned the killing of teenager Shihab Uddin Sajal by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) near Bangladesh-India border in Chuadanga's Jibonnagar upazila on Saturday.
Delegates of the two border guarding forces sat in a sector-commander-level flag meeting near Pillar 66 of the border on Sunday around 9:15am.
The BGB also demanded exemplary punishment for all who were involved in Shihab's murder. The BSF delegates said the matter would be considered with high priority and necessary action would be taken against the accused upon investigation.
Shihab, 16, was caught by the patrolling BSF members of its Banpur Dhaninchar camp in India on Saturday around 10am when he went across the border to pick mangoes from a mango orchard bought by a Bangladeshi mango trader, sources told the Dhaka Tribune.
The BSF members physically tortured Shihab, and when he tried to escape them, one of them shot him in the back.
Locals rushed Shihab to the upazila health complex, where he was pronounced dead.
The two-hour meeting was also attended by Shihab's father Mahbub Halsana and three other teenagers, who gave their statements regarding the incident before the border forces.
The BGB delegation was led by BGB Kushtia Sector Commander Col Md Mahbubur Rahman, while the BSF delegation was led by India's Krishnanagar BSF Sector Commander Kilas Lal Shah.
Meanwhile, the incident has sparked fear among the Bangladeshi mango traders who bought mango orchards across the border.
“We fear for our lives, but we invested our money there. We don't know what to do,” they said.
