Lightning kills 22, injures 20 in the country

At least 22 people were killed and 20 others were injured by lightning in Dhaka and several other districts around the country yesterday. In Dhaka, two university students were struck by lightning and killed in Jatrabari's Katherpool area in the evening, while another was injured. The deceased were Mohammad Noman Hasan Lincoln, 21, who was a student at Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, and Shahed Sohag, 20, who was a student at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology. Witnesses said the victims were playing football in a field when they were struck by lightning around 5pm. Locals rushed them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where Lincoln and Sohag were pronounced dead. The injured victim, Raiyan, is currently undergoing treatment there. In Rajshahi, three people were killed and four others injured by lightning in Mohonpur upazila in the afternoon. The victims – Abdur Razzak, 28, from Ata Narayanpur village, Abdul Aziz, 50, from Hattoir village and Sri Soito Chandra, 30, from Dangapara village – died on the spot when a thunderbolt struck them during a storm around 1:30pm, said Abdus Samad, chairman of Mohonpur upazila. The injured were Jalal Uddin, 40, from Pullakuri village, Alimon Begum, 70, from Baroipara village, and Jahanara Begum, 28, from Mollah Dying village. Another woman was injured by lightning at Dhaminpur village in Baghmara upazila. In Brahmanbaria, a housewife named Jahanara Begum, 50, was killed while her daughters Tasmina Akhter, 32, and Romeza Akhtar, 12, were injured by lightning at Dobazail village in Sarail around 1:30pm. In Gazipur, a farmer and a housewife were killed by lightning in Kapasia upazila around 4:30pm. The victims were Abdus Sattar, 30, from Satana village in Kurigram district, and Rubina, 36, from Kapasia's Singua village. In Habiganj, A farmer named Habib Miah, 25, was killed by lightning at Pratappur village in Baniachong upazila near a haor around 4:30pm. Eight other people were injured in the same upazila. In Kishoreganj, a college student named Shariful Islam Shuvo, 18, was killed by lightning in Hossainpur around 3pm. He was a student at Hossainpur Degree College. In Narshingdi, three people were killed by lightning and two others were injured in the afternoon. The deceased were Josna Begum, 38, a housewife from Fakir Char village in Raipura, Abdul Karim, 50, a farmer from Mahishura village in Sadar upazila, and Fuli Begum, 32, a housewife from Champaknagar village. The injured are Tayeb Ali, 17, and Meher Begum, 40, from Raipura. In Natore, two people were killed by lightning in the district's Lalpur upazila. The victims were Sahara Banu, 48, from North Lalpur, and Mobarak Ali, 30, from Raghunath village. Two others were injured in the upazila as well. In Sirajganj, five people were killed by lightning in the district's Raiganj and Ullahpara upazilas. The victims were Nupur Khatun, 8, from Chokpur village, Abdul Motaleb, 42, and Anwar Hossain, 45, from Baikanthapur village, and Abdul Latif, 35, and Shahinur Begum, 30, from Shimla village. In Pirojpur, two people of the same family were struck by lightning at Harji villiage in the district's Mathbaria upazila early yesterday. Yunus Sikdar, 60, a farmer, was killed on the spot, while his sister-in-law Ayesha Begum, 55, was severely injured. In Nilphamari, a housewife named Lalbibi Begum, 35, was killed by lightning at Phulerghat village in Kishoriganj upazila.
