He is a policeman in the line of duty

Dispel your assumptions and speculations, i.e. say no to fake news, and wait for the facts.

In a photo that has gone viral on Facebook over the weekend, an armed man in his underwear can be seen running next to the police.

The Dhaka Tribune can confirm that this man is indeed a member of law enforcement.

Meet Constable Ebadat from South Keraniganj police station.

On Friday morning, he was stationed near the Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge where workers were protesting a raise in truck tolls.

According to Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shah Zaman, his superior officer, Ebadat was attacked by the transport workers with sharp weapons.

“They hacked away at him and ripped off his clothes. Throughout the ordeal, Ebadat was vigilant enough to hold on to his gun, lest the attackers snatch it and misuse it,” OC Shah Zaman told the Dhaka Tribune.

“The protesters pelted the police with bricks and took refuge in a BRTA office nearby. We had to dispatch additional police to rescue them.”

Ebadat is currently undergoing medical treatment at Rajarbag Central Police Hospital.

Regarding the incident, the police have filed a case accusing 31 identified attackers and 500-600 unidentified attackers.

So, all those memes about this guy being a policeman in the line of duty? You can bet he was responding to the call of duty. The ramifications of a civilian snatching a law enforcement personnel’s weapon and discharging it are very, very severe. As difficult as the protests have been, if a bullet from a policeman's firearm were to injure or kill someone, regardless of who fired the shot, could have greatly aggravated the situation.
