If you are a cat lover, then today is the day for you. August 8 is officially International Cat Day, giving pet-owners around the world one more reason to love their furry friends. With an estimated 500 million pet cats around the world, you more than likely own one yourself, or know someone who does. International Cat Day began as an initiative by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) as a way to recognize one of the most popular and well-loved pets around the world. Enjoy the special day with some special cat facts that may surprise you: * Humans domesticated cats (or were domesticated by cats) nearly 9,500 years ago. There is also significant evidence that cats were venerated as representatives of the Egyptian goddess Bastet as early as 2890 BCE, and were mummified after death. * Cats often bring back dead animals for their owners because they are trying to teach humans how to hunt just like they would kitten (see, they are actually the ones in charge...). * Cats have one of the best sensory systems around. They can hear sounds between 55 Hz and 79,000 Hz, as opposed to humans' 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. They have also excellent night vision, meaning they make for great burglars. * Despite having powerful sensory systems, cats cannot taste sweetness. Most adult cats are also lactose intolerant, meaning that cats liking milk is just an urban myth (Tom & Jerry lied). * Cat videos are most popular genre on YouTube. On account of International Cat Day, you can follow #InternationalCatDay on Twitter for adorable cat pictures, videos and facts. You can also look up Tardar Sauce, aka Grumpy Cat who just recently signed a movie deal after appearing in multiple memes (@tardthegrumpycat) and P-Chan, who has also gained a meme following of her own (@ryotokuro) on Instagram.
