Sushma Swaraj to visit Myanmar

Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj will visit Myanmar from Aug 8 to 11 to attend the ASEAN-India foreign ministers meeting in Naypyidaw, BSS reports.

It will be her fourth visit to a neighbouring country since the Narendra Modi government assumed office. Earlier, she visited Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal.

This is part of the Modi government's policy to strengthen ties with its neighbouring countries.

Briefing reporters about her visit, Indian external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said Sushma Swaraj will attend the India-ASEAN Foreign Ministers meeting, the East Asian Summit meeting for Foreign Ministers, and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), which are being held in Myanmar.

On the sidelines of the meetings, Sushma will also hold bilateral meetings with her counterparts from China, Australia and Vietnam, among others.

Akbaruddin said the ministers would discuss completion of the multi-nodal transit transport link between Kolkata, Sittwe and Mizoram, as well as the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway.

Ms Swaraj will meet Myanmar's President Thein Sein before she returns.
