Tarun Tejpal charged with rape

Tarun Tejpal, the founder of Tehelka, has been charged with the rape of a junior colleague.

Tejpal has also been charged with “sexual harassment” and “outraging the modesty of a woman”, Press Trust of India reports.

The former editor of prominent news magazine in India, has been in prison since 30 November. He denies the charges.

Legal experts say if found guilty, Mr Tejpal could be sentenced to at least seven years in jail.

Prosecutors filed charges, running to nearly 2,700 pages, in the court of Goa's Chief Judicial Magistrate Anuja Prabhudesai on Monday.

Tejpal is accused of raping the reporter at an annual Tehelka conference in Goa in November last year.

The victim did not press charges, but detailed her allegations against Tejpal to her boss at Tehelka, Shoma Chaudhary, in an email that was leaked. The Goa Police used that email to commence its investigation against Tejpal.
