Modi clinches 3rd victory in Varanasi

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi secured his third victory in Varanasi, according to election commission figures.

Modi was re-elected with 612,970 votes, against the Indian National Congress candidate Ajay Rai with a margin of 1,52,513 votes in the Hindu holy city.

Varanasi is on the 80 parliamentary constituencies of Uttar Pradesh, which voted in the seventh and final phases of the general elections. Modi has secured this seat twice before.

The state witnessed heavy campaigning as well as high profile leaders conducting road-shows.

Even though Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) gives National Democratic Alliance (NDA) a strong unexpected competition, the BJP-led alliance is leading in 294 seats.

NDA has struggled in prominent states such as Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal as well as Maharashtra.

For his third term, Modi targets a developed India by 2047. In 2019, Modi secured 63.62% of the votes while in 2014, he defeated his rival Arvind Kejriwal.
