Monsoon devastation claims 624 lives in India

This year's monsoon season in India has left a trail of devastation, claiming the lives of 624 people in rain-related incidents, according to data from the country's home ministry.

The data supports the Indian Meteorological Department's findings that deaths and property damage are linked to heavy rainfall. Many parts of India have received lower than normal rainfall this year compared to 2022.

However, Himachal Pradesh has been grappling with record-high rainfall in some parts, resulting in 99 deaths this year compared to 187 during the same period last year.

This can be explained by the absence of major road accidents caused by the rain, according to a state disaster management official quoted by Hindustan Times.

Other areas reporting flooding and water-logging have not experienced a high number of deaths.

Gujarat reported the highest number of deaths at 103, likely influenced by Cyclone Biparjoy's landfall in the state.

Karnataka recorded 87 deaths, Assam 38, Rajasthan 36, Haryana 19, and Punjab 11. Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh saw fewer fatalities due to reduced heavy rainfall compared to last year.

In Delhi, residents faced a new challenge as water entered some of the relief camps in the Yamuna Bazar area, according to NDTV.  Over the past week, Delhi has witnessed the worst flood-like situation in several decades.
