The central government of India—upon the directives provided by their Supreme Court—will have to verify and confirm the nationality and birth place of Tripura Chief Minister (CM) Biplab Kumar Deb.
The Supreme Court of India has passed this order over a writ petition filed by the Pradyote Kishore Debverman, successor of the Tripura's royal family and Indian Congress leader.
As per the Supreme Court's instructions, not only Biplab Deb, but also all those who work in constitutional posts in the Tripura government, will have to get their nationality verified. The verification process will be performed and supervised by the central government of India.
Ending a long reign of Leftist rule in Tripura, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in March 2018, formed a government for the very first time in that region; which led to Biplab Deb becoming the chief minister of that state.
Since the start of his term as the chief minister of Tripura, rumours of him being born in Bangladesh started to circulate in the mainstream media and on social media. The Wikipedia page on him had Bangladesh as his birth place for a very long time.
Biplab Deb's father, Haradhan Deb, and mother, Meena Rani Deb, moved to India from Bangladesh's Kachua upazila of Chandpur, during the1971 war.
While these rumours are being spread and a negative campaign is being waged against Biplab Deb, the Chief Minister's Office in Tripura gave an official statement that the Tripura government chief was born in India and is, without a doubt, an Indian citizen.
According to the statement issued by the Tripura CM's Office, Biplab Deb was born in Jamjuri village, of Gomati district in Tripura, on November 25, 1971.
