Why Sharmin's name took so long to appear

In the casualty lists released in the wake of the US-Bangla Airlines crash in Kathmandu, Nepal, the name of a member of the flight crew was conspicuously missing. Although authorities in Nepal and the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs published lists, some of the finer details had fallen through the cracks. The flight crew, according to US-Bangla Airlines and the Bangladesh embassy, was composed of pilot Abid Sultan, co-pilot Prithula Rashid and flight attendants Khwaja Hussain and KHM Shafey. However, the boarding manifest procured from Dhaka airport which was cross-checked against the manifest at Kathmandu airport, noted that the flight attendants were named Sharmin Akhter and Khwaja Hassan Muhammed Shafey. When US-Bangla Airlines was contacted, General Manager Kamrul Islam said Sharmin was not on the flight and that Shafey and Khwaja were the flight attendants. When he was asked if Shafey is Khwaja Hussain, he contested it, saying they were two different people. The Dhaka Tribune also spoke to Shafey's sister Bashima Saifullah, who said her brother's full name is Khwaja Hassan Muhammed Shafey. Bangladesh High Commissioner to Nepal Mashfee Binte Shams thanked the Dhaka Tribune for bringing this to her attention and said her office would look into the matter of the missing person immediately. Soon after, the embassy papers reflected the change and Sharmin's name was included in the list and the duplicate name of Khwaja removed.
