Akhil Bhartiya Itihaas Sankalan Samiti, the history wing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has demanded stopping Friday prayers at Taj Mahal.
RSS affiliate body's National Organisation Secretary Balmukund Pandey told
India Today TV questioned the use of a national heritage as a religious site.
Since Muslims are allowed to offer prayers there, he demanded that Hindus, too, be allowed to perform puja at the Taj Mahal.
The site remains closed on Fridays to allow Muslims to offer prayers.
Pandey claimed there was “ample evidence” that Taj Mahal was a Shiva temple. He said they were collecting evidence and would soon detail every aspect of it.
He said his organisation was making a list of monuments that were demolished by Muslim rulers to build mausoleums or other buildings.
Meanwhile, the imam at the heritage sight dubbed the controversy “uncalled for” and urged to solve it through dialogue.
Hindu nationalist organisation RSS has been trying to rewrite Indian history to fit into its worldview.
