Five killed as truck hit train in India

Five people including a Congress lawmaker have been killed when a truck rammed a train in India's Andhra Pradesh.

Venkatesh Naik, the Congress legislator from Devadurg in Karnataka, and two other train riders were killed. The driver and cleaner of the truck were also killed.

The accident took place at around 2:20am Monday at a level crossing in Anantapur district, NDTV reported.

According to railway officials, the brakes of the truck failed and the speeding vehicle crashed through the barricade of the crossing and then hit the train.

They said four coaches of the train derailed in the incident.

"One lorry filled with stones broke closed gate and dashed into the train. Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu is monitoring the development," NDTV quoted Indian Railways spokesperson Anil Saxena.
