Delhi law minister held in fake degree case

Delhi police have arrested state Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar in an alleged fake degree case, reported a number of Indian news outlets.

Information about Tomar's arrest came to light after senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh tweeted about his detention around 11am Tuesday.

Tomar had been booked under Sections pertaining to cheating and fraud after a university from Bhagalpur in Bihar submitted to a city court that he was not on its student roll despite having a degree seemingly issued by it.

The police claimed it had sought Tomar's time and asked him to join an investigation regarding the case on several occasions but the minister had not made himself available.

A senior police officer said permission from Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung was sought and given, prior to Tomar's arrest as per the protocol.

"I am in a car, being taken to the Vasant Vihar police station," Tomar was understood to have told his aides as per police sources.

However, Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi said he had no information about the minister's arrest.

Tomar will be produced at Saket Court around 2pm.
