A former domestic worker sued the consul general of Bangladesh and his wife in New York, alleging he was lured to America with ‘false’ promises.
Mashud Parves Rana filed the lawsuit on Friday in Manhattan federal court seeking unspecified damages, reports AP.
Rana filed the lawsuit saying he was lured to America with false promises of $3,000 monthly wages and then was forced to work in oppressive conditions.
Earlier in December 2013, an Indian diplomat was charged with a criminal offense for visa fraud over lying about underpaying her nanny. She was the deputy consul general for political, economic, commercial and women’s affairs at the Indian Consulate General.
Lawyer Dana Sussman, who is representing Richard in the case against Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, is also representing Rana in the case against Bangladeshi diplomat Monirul.
The lawsuit says Consul General Monirul Islam and his wife, Fahima Tahsina Prova, forced Rana to work 17 hours a day without a day off for more than 18 months.
Rana alleges the couple would not let him leave their two Manhattan homes and threatened to beat him or kill him if he left.
Dhaka Tribune has sent a mail to Bangladesh consulate office in New York for its comments regarding the matter.
Sources said Monirul Islam has been transferred to Morocco as the Consul General, two weeks ago. However, the official site of Bangladesh consulate office in New York is still showing his name as the Consul General.
Monirul Islam is currently staying in New York. He will leave for Morocco within a day or two, foreign ministry officials said.
