Doly Begum honoured for her contribution to the community

Doly Begum, member of the Ontario Legislative Assembly, has received “PACE-RMM Women Achievers’ Award 2019” under the “Woman of Distinction” category for her distinguished contributions and commitments to the public and the community. 

Progressive Action for Community Empowerment (PACE), a non-profit organization, and Radio Metro Mail, an infotainment channel broadcast from Toronto, every year recognizes a Bangladeshi origin Canadian woman for her achievement, says a press release on Saturday.

At 29 years of age, the Bangladeshi origin Canadian politician, Doly Begum, was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the 2018 provincial election in Canada as the youngest New Democrat candidate.   

On International Women’s Day 2019, MPP Doly was recognized for her efforts in empowering the community. Meeting MPP Doly at her office, this morning, the representatives from PACE and Radio Metro Mail announced the award. 

Appreciating the efforts of PACE and Radio Metro Mail, Doly Begum said: “I am thankful to the team and people behind introducing such an award. I’m touched. People and the community have always been my focus and I would like to work with them to empower and inspire our communities to overcome any challenges that impede our social and economic prosperity. I need constructive feedback from the community to continue my community work”  

Nusrat Jahan, director of Radio Metro Mail, said: “This award is in sync with our commitment towards the cause of empowering women. The idea is to recognize and acknowledge the contributions of women achievers across fields, who will be role models to countless other Bangladeshi Canadian women in Canada and North America.”

Highlighting the aspirations of Bangladeshi Canadian community,Moustafa Makhmud, president of PACE said: “Doly has shown us that if we have aspiration and determination we can achieve our goals; her efforts and commitment to the community and interest for politics has inspired Canadian Bangladeshi community and enhanced our confidence. Doly Begum is now a role model for our younger generation.” 

PACE board members Mohammad H Abedin Khan, Emamul Haque, and Fahmida Chowdhury and Rina Shen Gupta were present in the occasion.

The award certificate and the crest will be officially handed over to Doly Begum through a ceremony in Toronto on June 30.
