The useful shorthand used is by everyone from the Secret Service to journalists to identify the US President while also giving their full title.
The origin of the phrase POTUS is in telegraph code developed for news agencies before the telephone.
POTUS began as an abbreviation used by telegraphic code operators in the 1890s. It stands for "President of the United States. Telegraphic codes were used to save money, but could not be secret.
But in these divided times, not everyone feels comfortable recognising Donald Trump as POTUS.
