Lebanon death toll climbs to 1,873 over the past year

At least 1,873 people have been killed and 9,134 injured in Lebanon as a result of Israeli attacks since October 8 of last year, according to a report from the Disaster Risk Management Unit on Tuesday.

However, Lebanon’s health ministry said Israeli strikes on Tuesday killed 55 people.

The escalation has been fueled by an ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which has intensified in recent months.

Thousands of civilians were injured when pagers and walkie-talkies, rigged with explosives, detonated in coordinated attacks in September. Both Lebanon and Hezbollah attributed these explosions to Israel's intelligence operations.

Throughout September, Israel carried out targeted assassinations of several senior Hezbollah figures, including the group's leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

In late September and early October, Israel launched a series of airstrikes on southern Beirut neighborhoods and towns in southern Lebanon. These air raids resulted in more than 800 deaths within days and forced nearly one million civilians to flee their homes, creating a severe humanitarian crisis.

On Tuesday, Iran launched its second direct attack on Israel in history, firing what it said were 200 missiles including hypersonic weapons, sending Israeli civilians into shelters and prompting several countries in the region to shut their airspace.

Israel, which put the number of missiles fired at its territory at 180, bombarded Lebanese strongholds of Iran ally Hezbollah, with heavy strikes early Wednesday on south Beirut.
