In a shocking revelation, Oxfam’s latest report underscores the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israel’s military offensive has claimed an average of 250 lives daily over the past 100 days, surpassing the death tolls of major conflicts worldwide.
The report also highlights the impact of the resistance campaign by Hamas and other groups in Israel, with 1,200 casualties on October 7 alone.
Sally Abi Khalil, Oxfam’s Middle East Director, expressed grave concern, stating: “For 100 days, the people of Gaza have endured a living hell. Nowhere is safe, and the entire population is at risk of famine.”
According to Oxfam’s calculations, Gaza’s daily death rate is significantly higher than in recent major conflicts, including Syria, Sudan, Iraq, Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Yemen.
The agency warns that constant bombardment is forcing people into smaller areas, and over one million individuals - more than half of Gaza’s population - have sought shelter in Rafah on the Egyptian border.
The crisis is compounded by Israel’s restrictions on aid, with only 10% of the required weekly food aid reaching Gaza.
Oxfam’s staff in Rafah reports overcrowded conditions, scarce food and water, and depleted essential medicines.
Oxfam also emphasizes the threat beyond direct casualties, pointing to the looming risks of hunger and disease.
The onset of cold weather exacerbates the situation, with a shortage of blankets, no fuel for heating devices, and no hot water. Cases of diarrhea have surged, posing a severe health risk.
The report calls for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and unrestricted access to crucial aid supplies.
The United Nations International Court of Justice is currently examining the legality of Israel’s assault on Gaza, potentially issuing an emergency order for a halt to the military campaign.
Oxfam supports all efforts to investigate and address mass atrocities and human rights violations, regardless of the perpetrator.
As the crisis deepens, international attention is crucial to prevent further loss of lives and address the urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza.
